This is the first bad review on this blog. This album is bad. Just...so so bad. Like...sort of complete trash.
Before we tear into this though, let's give credit where credit is due. The instrumental and musical work on this album is really solid. Very scratchy, grimy rock noise going on here. Neat chords that pack an easy crunch and solid melodies. And in truth, when J Mascis isn't singing, the music is really good. I would give this whole album an 8.0 if J Mascis were a better singer I think. I really like it.
But he isn't a better singer. He is not. I have never heard a voice pollute music more in my entire life. His voice is a plague to this album. There will be instrumental moments where he isn't singing that you just go "oh waaaait a minute, I judged this album wrong...this is sick!" And then that loser, that snake, that monster of a man decides to emit vocal presence, and you are reminded of why this was actually used as a torture device. Actually BAD.
Sewage. Fecal matter. My god. If his voice was even 50% better this album would be 90% better. Never listen to this unless you are interested in writing a dissertation on how not to sing.
Stupid 3.0
