God damn. This album is huge. In really every sense of the word. Not only is it a long album, but the scope of the album is huge. It is such an ambitios piece of work, that it is almost a daunting task to listen to the entire thing. Each musical idea is different and fresh, while always keeping with the dark and desolate tone of the album. Nothing is held back in this mamouth work of art.
And, while I commend that, it also happens to be the thing that holds this album back from being essentially perfect. The album doesn't move at a clip, and it knows that it doesn't. In fact, it moves slowly. There are entire instrumental songs that feel like a segway from one lyrical song to another. And again, it's an increadible feat of songwriting, but it just frankly takes too long.
Let's be clear, I don't wish the album was shorter. It maintains its integrity by holding nothing back and I appreciate that immensely. However, for my own taste it doesn't move fast enough. This is a massive piece of wonderous work that sounds like nothing else I have ever heard.
Exciting. Striking. Heavy.
Long 7.0
